Project “Bellerophon”, a Picnic Boat 37 Re-imagined by Hinckley

A Picnic Boat 37 Reimagined

Bellerophon is a comprehensive refit of a 2010 Hinckley Picnic Boat 37—Hull 006—bringing together heritage, advanced marine technology, and the depth of craftsmanship found across every Hinckley service yard. From structural reengineering and propulsion to interiors, helm integration, and onboard systems, this is a classic Hinckley reimagined to a thoroughly modern standard.

A Complete Refit, Defined by Craftmanship

Bellerophon was approached as a true restoration and modernization—rooted in respect for her origins as an early Picnic Boat 37, but shaped by years of neglect. Her varnish had faded, systems were tired, and time had taken its toll.

From salvage to seaworthy, the vessel was comprehensively reengineered—restoring her character while elevating every detail, from systems to finishes.

The result is a renewed expression of Bellerophon—where heritage is preserved and craftsmanship brought fully back to life.

Exterior Presence, Completely Recast

Finished in Awlgrip Steel Blue Metallic, Bellerophon marks a deliberate shift from her original Flag Blue—introducing a sharper, more contemporary profile while remaining unmistakably Hinckley. The metallic finish reveals itself differently throughout the day, shifting with the light from deep, almost charcoal tones to a brighter, more reflective blue. A Whisper Grey bootstripe adds a crisp, understated contrast, refining the overall composition. Executed within Hinckley’s highly controlled paint facilities, the result reflects a standard defined by precision, depth, and enduring durability.

Interior Craftsmanship, Fully Realized

Inside, Bellerophon was reimagined through a complete soft-goods and material refresh in collaboration with Tack Studios—bringing a more tailored, contemporary expression to the interior. STIDD helm chairs, fully reupholstered in-house by Hinckley’s upholstery team, feature real leather hides with diamond blue stitching—pairing proven ergonomics with a refined, handcrafted finish.

Throughout the cockpit and salon, Misia Coin de Paradis – Bleu Éternel introduces a rich, textural layer—an advanced woven textile designed for both interior and exterior use, balancing durability with a refined tactile quality. Forward, the V-berth is finished in Link, Monterey – Rain, offering a softer, more understated contrast below.

A suede headliner extends throughout the pilothouse and interior spaces, diffusing light and elevating the overall atmosphere. Every material, seam, and surface was carefully considered—resulting in an interior that feels cohesive, composed, and unmistakably bespoke.

Entertainment, Power, and Comfort Reconsidered

Bellerophon’s onboard experience was reimagined well beyond aesthetics. At its center is a Bang & Olufsen sound system with Celestial speakers, engineered to deliver precise, room-filling sound through advanced acoustic tuning and directional control—creating clarity, depth, and balance throughout the boat.

Supporting systems include a Cay Electronics lithium battery bank providing onboard AC power without the need for a generator, Dometic self-contained air-conditioning for the pilothouse and accommodations below, Starlink connectivity, and low-profile solar integration from Solbian.

The result is a quieter, more efficient, and more connected onboard environment—where comfort and performance are seamlessly aligned.

Reengineering the Foundation

Bellerophon’s transformation extends well beneath the surface. Originally powered by Volvo Penta D4 300hp engines, the vessel underwent a comprehensive repower to twin Volvo Penta D6-480 diesels—requiring a complete reengineering of the engine room to ensure proper alignment, balance, and long-term reliability. The result is a more capable, responsive, and refined performance profile, with improved power delivery and overall efficiency. This work included the relocation and reconstruction of structural elements, full re-glassing of the engine room, and the redesign and repositioning of the exhaust system—executed to the same exacting standard as the visible finishes.
